The San Marino Unified School District Board of Education is expected to discuss its open superintendent spot at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 7, according to board President Shelley Ryan.
Jeff Wilson resigned from the superintendent’s post in April but remained in that position until June 30, when he took over at the Claremont Unified School District. Soon afterward, the board appointed Linda de la Torre as its acting superintendent.
On July 7, the board held a special meeting that was facilitated by education consultant Joel Shawn, a former superintendent, who guided members through 2½ hours of discussions and exercises designed to explore the options that the panel should consider in its search for a successor to Wilson.
The SMUSD board has not posted an official opening for the superintendent position, Ryan confirmed. She declined a request for more information on the subject.
After the July 7 meeting, Ryan indicated there is no set timeline for the search: “Since high-quality education is dependent on high-quality leadership, the timeline in acquiring an excellent candidate is ensured through an extensive four- to five-month comprehensive process.”
Since that meeting, the board has held governance training for its new members — Jane Chon and Mike Killackey. Chon was elected in November 2020 and Killackey was appointed to the seat that became open when Julie Chan Lin resigned earlier this year.
