World of Studio Ghibli Comes Alive at SMHS Grad Night

The San Marino High School’s Class of 2023 celebrated an impressive Studio Ghibli-themed grad night event following the graduation ceremony on the high school’s campus on May 26.
While in the truly transformed main gym, students dined on delicious bites from Alexander’s Catering and Howie’s Market. Entertainment included mesmerizing magician, Johnny Ace Palmer and Hollywood Hypnotist Kevin Stone. Music selections by DJ Eric Cahill of the GiG Entertainment kept students dancing throughout the evening while they were surrounded by elaborately hand-painted Studio Ghibli scenery and sets.
The fun-filled, action-packed night continued until the early morning hours as the graduating class played carnival booth and casino games and participated in the KinderWall photo guessing contest. Snacks including pizza, popcorn, hot dogs and nachos remained plentiful. Specially selected prizes ranging from electronics, designer wear, amusement park tickets and much more were awarded to game and contest winners.
Students took home customized Studio Ghibli Grad Night themed memorabilia, including hoodies designed and donated by Dora and Kosta Kaporis, as well as traditional decorated ceramic steins filled with candy and party favors.
Grad Night 2023 was chaired by Kathryn Oliveros, along with business chair, Debi Cribs and creative chair, Alice Song Ulrich, all who had graduating seniors. Hundreds of additional volunteers comprising of parents, community members and the Old Guard worked tirelessly to create and construct this incomparable and unforgettable life experience for San Marino High School graduating seniors.
