Tournament Title Adds to San Marino Boys’ Basketball Historic Start

The unbeaten start continues for the San Marino boys’ basketball team after the Titans won the Bellflower Tournament on Dec. 9, extending their winning run to 12 straight victories.

San Marino topped South Torrance 57-37 to win its second tournament in as many weeks. The Titans previously captured the San Dimas Tournament title on Dec. 2.

The Titans are currently ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division III-A polls.

The 12-0 overall record to begin the season is San Marino’s best opening run in decades, according to school officials. The Titans won 14 of their first 15 games in the 2021-22 season, but their undefeated start stretched just five games. Last season, San Marino won its first six games.

At the Bellflower Tournament, San Marino senior Adrian Huang was named MVP, and seniors Bobby Reyes and Jayden Tse were named to the all-tournament team.

Huang scored 15 points, and Reyes and San Marino junior Casey Chan each scored 11 to help the Titans capture the tournament title in their 20-point victory against South Torrance.

San Marino kicked off the tournament with a 68-51 victory over host Bellflower on Dec. 5. The Titans were led by Huang with 20 points, and Reyes added 16 points and senior Jack Fuerst tallied 13 points.

In the following round on Dec. 7, San Marino cruised to an 87-57 win over Esperanza as Reyes scored 24 points and pulled down five rebounds. Huang added 15 points and six rebounds, while Tse tacked on 11 points.

SAN MARINO 72, GABRIELINO 47

The winning streak continues after San Marino defeated Gabrielino 72-47 at Gabrielino High in San Gabriel on Monday.

Reyes led San Marino with 23 points, and grabbed seven rebounds and four steals. Tse added 14 points and sophomore Marco Rangel scored 11 points.

The Titans started Rio Hondo League play on the road against South Pasadena (6-1 overall) on Dec. 13. Results of the league opener will be included in the next issue of the Tribune.
