Keep San Marino Homes Fire-Free This Holiday

Holiday decorations invite a higher rate of fire danger into homes during December, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

While structure fires are not an everyday occurrence in San Marino, the San Marino Fire Department wants to remind residents that faulty or old electrical cords, broken bulbs, frayed wires, or simply knocking a Christmas tree over, can cause fires.

Fire Chief Mario Rueda said, “Christmas trees can ignite very quickly because of the combination of a combustible tree, presents and furnishings. Such fires can double in size every 30 seconds. Also, many of these fires happen at night so residents should make sure their smoke detectors work and the batteries are changed. Lastly, make sure that while you’re sleeping you close your doors. That can be the difference between life and death this holiday season.”

SMFD also recommends that residents do not place their trees close to heat sources like the fireplace, space heaters or vents. Also, make sure pets stay away from decorations, including menorahs and Christmas trees.

Fire prevention and adherence to safety tips can be the key difference between enjoying a safe and comfortable holiday or experiencing a disaster.

The SMFD offers an in-home fire prevention inspection for residents through the “Operation Fire Safe” program. Firefighters will come to your home, conduct an inspection, install or replace smoke alarms and help ensure your home is safe.

To request a fire safety inspection, please contact the SMFD at (626) 300-0735. For more information on keeping your home fire safe, visit cityofsanmarino.org/firesafety.
