San Marino Girls’ Soccer Topples League Champions Behind Tokuchi Game Winner

Carrying an unbeaten record into their Rio Hondo League opener, the San Marino girls’ soccer team put it all on the line against reigning league champion South Pasadena at San Marino High on Dec. 13.

It was a sophomore connection that propelled the Titans to a 1-0 league victory over the Tigers.

San Marino sophomore Sasha Ortiz found sophomore Makayla Tokuchi for the match’s only goal.

San Marino senior Calista Tan secured the clean sheet and recorded one save in the matchup.

The Titans improved to 5-0 overall with the one-goal victory over South Pasadena (4-2), which suffered its second loss of the season at the hands of the Titans.

San Marino is currently ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division V polls released Dec. 18.

TITANS SUFFER FIRST LOSS

San Marino girls’ soccer was shut out by Monrovia 2-0 on Dec. 15.

It was the Titans’ first loss of the season, and the first time this year San Marino (5-1 overall, 1-1 in league) failed to score.

The Titans had scored 13 goals in five games prior to their second league match against the unbeaten Wildcats (7-0), who are the top-ranked team in the CIF-SS Division IV polls.

A pair of Rio Hondo League road games await for the Titans. First up will be a trip to Blair High on Jan. 10, followed by a match against Temple City on Jan. 12. Both matches are set to kick off at 4 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

The San Marino boys’ soccer team was shut out in their first two Rio Hondo League matches of the season.

San Marino (1-7, 0-2 league) was dealt a 4-0 loss in a matchup against reigning champion South Pasadena in the two team’s Rio Hondo League opener at South Pasadena High on Dec. 13.

The Titans again couldn’t find the net in their second league match against Monrovia on Dec. 15 in a 3-0 defeat at Monrovia High.

San Marino looks ahead to a pair of league matches at home, starting with a matchup against Blair on Jan. 10 at 4 p.m., then a showdown against Temple City on Jan. 12 at 4 p.m.
