Rotary Club Sponsors High School Speech Contest

The Rotary Club of San Marino welcomed four speakers from local high schools to compete in its annual “Four Way Test” speech contest. The speeches are required to incorporate the Rotary Club’s Four Way Test of “the things we think, do and say.”

The Four Tests are:

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

The contest winner, Sarah Lin, is a senior at Southwestern Academy. She speaks six languages and intends to major in business administration with an international focus. She enjoys hiking and chess.

First runner-up Michelle Fakrongha is also from Southwestern Academy. She is the captain of her basketball team and intends to major in computer science and English.

Runner-up Harrison Walker is on the speech and debate team at San Marino High School. He intends to major in economics and public policy and is completing his Eagle Scout project.

Runner-up Shija Tang is a senior at San Marino High School and will major in biology. She is active in Girl Scouts and speech and debate.

Each contestant received prize money. As the winner, Lin will move on to the regional competition, where she will compete against others who have won at the club level.

San Marino Rotary Club President-elect Ginny Hsiao was in charge of the contest.
