Prometheans Keep the Fire Burning at SMHS

Honoring a longstanding tradition at San Marino High School, counselors and administrators Wednesday morning paid tribute to 24 of its finest students at a special breakfast, and it’s a safe bet that cafeteria food never tasted so good.

They are known as Prometheans, soon-to-be graduates who have displayed character, courage and kindness throughout their student-careers at San Marino High School. These students received a special tassel as well as a healthy dose of respect at the annual event, which was attended by Superintendent Linda de la Torre, several members of the governing board and a bevy of proud parents.

During a speech, C. Joseph Chang, clerk of the San Marino School Board, encouraged the students to thank their parents for the support given to them during their education.

Associated Student Body President Lucas Levy pointed out that his fellow Prometheans not only excelled in academics, but distinguished themselves for their willingness to assist the school community, especially when challenged by the pandemic.

That thought was shared by San Marino High School Principal Jason Kurtenbach, who commended how the honorees had overcome additional challenges, especially during the past 26 months.

“The group of students who earned the honor of being named an SMHS Promethean inspire hope for the future of our community, country and world,” Kurtenbach said. “They demonstrate a level of intellectual passion, kindness, selflessness, and a wish to do meaningful purposeful work throughout their lives in the hope of helping others. We are truly lucky to have them as future leaders.”

The award is named in honor of Prometheus, a mythological Titan god of fire, who is believed to be a champion of humanity for sharing education and other gifts.

This year’s Prometheans included Chelsea An, Elaina Lee, Lucas Chen, Connor Tan, Matthew Wei, Camdyn Wu, Charis Tang, Alison Norton, Sophia Yao, Madison Spitzer, Amber Tang, Elise Mach, Alexander Chuang, Corey Sy, Lucas Levy, Andrew Keefer, Charisse Chih, Stanley Wong, Megan Klusman, Anya Tang, Mabel Tan, Chloe Lau, Hetty Chen and Anika Kesavalu.
