Maria Elena McClurg, a cherished resident of San Marino, California, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024, due to complications from leukemia. Affectionately known as “Nena” to her immediate family, she departed this world surrounded by loved ones. Maria will be most fondly remembered for her vibrant and radiant spirit, her unwavering dedication to her family, and the enduring love she shared with all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born on January 9, 1946, in Los Angeles, Maria embraced her Angeleno roots, graduating from Los Angeles High School before pursuing her studies at UCLA, where her allegiance to the Bruins’ football team developed and remained steadfast — always cheering enthusiastically, whether it was for her beloved Bruins or whoever was playing USC.
Her career began at the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, where she met the love of her life, John McClurg. They married in 1972 and settled in San Marino, where Maria’s nurturing spirit flourished as she embraced the role of motherhood and immersed herself in the community, forming enduring friendships with neighbors and fellow parents. In 1988, she embarked on the career that she said brought her the most joy — teaching the computer lab at Carver Elementary School.
During nearly half a century residing in her beloved San Marino, Maria remained deeply involved in community endeavors. From orchestrating Grad Night in 1996 to her dedicated involvement with the Parent Teacher Association and PT Affiliates, she purposefully devoted her time and expertise to the betterment of the community and its schools. Serving as treasurer for the San Marino Schools Foundation was a testament to her commitment, a role she faithfully upheld until her recent Leukemia diagnosis.
In retirement, Maria’s insatiable curiosity cultivated in her a passion for plants. As a docent at the Huntington Library Gardens, she loved regaling visitors with botanical trivia. And at home, she never missed an opportunity to educate her family about random plant facts and characteristics, whether they were interested or not.
Maria’s infectious energy and zest for life made every moment in her presence feel special. Her legacy is one of fun-filled memories, perpetual learning, and caring for others. Maria is survived by her children Christina Riehl (Johner) and Michael McClurg (Deidre). She will also be remembered fondly by her brother, Carlos Biernetzky (Rhonda); stepchildren John McClurg (Natali) and Julie Tyler (John); grandchildren Quinner, Whitaker, Zyler, Libby, Magnolia; step grandchildren Jason, Ryan, Kayla, Michelle, and Lauren; and her extended friends and family who brought so much joy to her life.
A funeral service to celebrate Maria’s life will be held on Friday, March 1, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena, followed by a gathering at the San Gabriel Country Club. Maria’s family welcomes all who knew and loved her to join them in honoring her memory.
