Tays Tarvin Bogue, at age 96, passed away peacefully at home on January 22, 2021.
Tays was born in Milligan College, Tennessee, on June 28, 1924, to the Reverend Merle G. and Ruth Steward Tarvin. She was the oldest of three children. She grew up in Alabama and Georgia and graduated as valedictorian of her class at Tuskegee High School. Then she attended Auburn University and was active in her Delta Zeta sorority.
One weekend on campus in 1944 she met a young army officer stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Tays and Bruce Bogue were married in 1945 after the end of World War II. Bruce was a native Californian and the young couple, with a 6-week-old baby, relocated in Los Angeles in 1947. Later they moved to San Marino and raised their two children, Betsy and Charlie. Tays cherished her family and was a devoted mother. The family shared many wonderful vacations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe, even living in Madrid one summer. In her 50s, after her children had earned their master’s degrees, Tays returned to college and earned her degree, a BS in Business Education. Tays resided in San Marino for nearly 65 years.
Tays was an active volunteer in the San Marino Guild of Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. She helped to raise nearly $2 million for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As a Guild member for 51 years, she served four terms as President, 12 terms as Treasurer, and five times as Celebrity Series Chair, the group’s chief fundraising event. She was an exemplary leader.
All her life, Tays Bogue stood tall as an inspiring, wise, strong and dedicated individual. She loved this country. Her faith in God was deep.
Tays and Bruce were married for 60 years until his passing in 2006. Tays is survived by her daughter Betsy Bogue of South Pasadena, her son Charlie Bogue of Laguna Beach, her sister Coralyn Harrell of Hayneville, Alabama, many nieces and nephews, and her loving caregiver, Donna Maez.
Graveside services will be held at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 13, 2021.
