San Marino Planning Commission Cracks Down on Devonport Appeal

By Krista Daly

Planning Commission Chair Howard Brody wants to send a message to the public – “This is a group that denies.”

Brody said this in reference to the appeal of 2730 Devonport Road, a case that was previously approved by the Design Review Committee. Four neighbors appealed the approval due to privacy concerns. After hearing from all sides, the Planning Commission agreed there were many things wrong with the proposed project and they unanimously approved the appeal.

The Design Review Committee revisited the project four times before finally approving the plans, which is a proposed two-story home that nearly reaches the maximum livable square footage at 3,658 and a proposed height of 23’6.”

James Ching, owner of the property in question, said efforts have been made to preserve the privacy of the neighbors such as planting tall trees. He also noted that he has the support of several neighbors. Despite that, neighbors spoke out during the Design Review Committee process before it was approved.
