A street rehabilitation project of Huntington Drive from Winston Avenue to Virginia Road starts this month. The $992,394 repair project was awarded to All American Asphalt of Corona, which submit ted the lowest of four bids.
The San Marino City Council awarded the contract to All American Asphalt at its July 29 meeting, also authorizing an additional appropriation of $424,724 for the repair.
“This project will remove two inches of old asphalt pavement from the street and replace it with two inches of Asphalt Rubber Hot Mix (ARHM), also known as rubberized asphalt. This project will also replace damaged concrete curbs,” explained Public Works Director and City Engineer Dan Wall.
Wall explained that the rubberized asphalt used in the project will have an environmentally-friendly impact.
“The rubberized asphalt used in the Huntington Drive Project will contain about 6,100 scrap tires,” he said, noting that California produces more than 40 million waste tires annually, with about three quarters of that going to landfills.
“The state faces the challenge of dealing with roughly 10 million surplus used tires annually,” he added.
In addition to its positive environmental impact, the rehabilitation project will have the added benefits of making this stretch of Huntington Drive more durable, safe and quiet.
Thanks to the rubberized asphalt, Wall noted, Huntington Drive’s new surface will be longer-lasting, resist cracking and provide better skid resistance, which reduces maintenance costs.
Drivers should expect periodic lane closures between September and December.
“The public will be made aware of these closures in advance of them occurring,” said Wall.
He added, “The Public Works Department will do everything within its power to ensure that the duration of lane closures and the other inconveniences that are part of road construction are minimized as much as possible.”
