To celebrate the Year of the Rooster, Carver Elementary School will host its annual Lunar New Year Celebration with lots of festivities on Friday, Jan. 27, from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
The celebration will include a traditional lion dance performance and martial arts demonstration, a fan dance by the 4th-grade Girl Scouts and a Chinese mask-changing performance, as well as arts, crafts and games.
Trees in the library courtyard will be decorated with Chinese New Year lanterns days before the celebration. Fortune cookies and good luck candies will also be distributed to students.
Carver’s Lunar New Year co-chairs are Kathleen Brown and Kathy Wu. Local dignitaries from the San Marino School District, the San Marino School Board and the San Marino School Foundation will attend the event, which is funded by the Chinese Club of San Marino and Carver’s PTA.
Festive preparations, including student dance and martial arts practices, are well underway for the upcoming annual Valentine Elementary School Lunar New Year celebration, which will honor the Year of the Rooster. Parents and special guests from the community are invited to view these student performances on the Valentine campus playground on Friday, Jan. 27, at 10:30 a.m.
Several Valentine students will be performing a Peacock Dance choreographed by stage designer and choreographer Rex Li. There will also be a student kung fu martial arts presentation choreographed by tai chi expert Li Jing.
A lunch reception for invited community officials and Valentine staff will follow in the school’s Little Theater. Colonial Kitchen, Fortune Bakery, New Moon and Taipei Bistro are catering the luncheon.
As part of the Valentine Lunar New Year festivities, all students are also invited to take part in a special lunchtime craft activity where they will be decorating roosters using traditional paint techniques.
Lunar New Year co-chairs Vivian Luu, Micah Walsh and Jenny Yessaian are assisting with the coordination of these events.
