‘San Marino Day’ Adds Educational Element

In case anyone had doubts about the success of last year’s event, The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens received north of 1,500 reservations for Tuesday’s 2nd ‘San Marino Day at The Huntington,’ which again went off without a hitch at the fabled institution.

Upwards of 30 restaurants and caterers set up shop on the East Lawn and North Vista to keep guests occupied sampling fine local cuisine as part of the San Marino Chamber of Commerce’s popular ‘Taste of San Marino.’

Dr. Steve Hindle, Acting President of The Huntington, summed it up nicely when he said that the community and research institution are the most cooperative in the world, rivaled only by Stratford-upon-Avon and the birthplace museum of William Shakespeare.

The event appropriately added an educational element this year as The Huntington and City of San Marino presented four local educators with $1,250 awards that can be put towards programs determined by the recipient.

Receiving the most enthusiastic cheers of the evening were Valentine Elementary School physical education teacher Laura Pollard, San Marino High School college counselor Mollie Beckler, Carver Elementary School counselor Linda Kuchmecki and Quoc Hoang, the computer lab coordinator at Huntington Middle School. Mayor Richard Sun oversaw the ceremony and the awards were presented by Principals Colleen Shields, Mary Johnson, Michael Lin and Jason Kurtenbach.
