Five local tennis athletes represented San Marino High School in the CIF Southern Section girls’ individual regionals at the Lakewood Tennis Courts on Monday, Nov. 25.
Vanderbilt-bound Anessa Lee won the Rio Hondo League singles crown and earned a first-round bye in her bracket and took on Madelyn Tadd of Long Beach Wilson. The Titan blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, and then shut out Victoria Recinos of Downey Warren with the same score.
Selina Wu also competed in the singles tournament and defeated Brianna Figuerroa of Lakewood Mayfair, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round. Wu was eliminated from the competition following a loss to Arcadia’s Samantha Wang in the second round.
Elaine Wu and Rakel Ang competed in the doubles tourney and will join Lee in the championship bracket. The San Marino duo opened with a first-round bye and then defeated Trisha Senthilnathan and Abigail Yoo of Cerritos, 6-1, 6-2. Wu and Ang punched their ticket into the final bracket by edging Long Beach Poly’s Katherine Johnson and Ava Deguzman, 6-4, 6-4.
Katie Kirkendall and Elisabeth Carter entered the competition as league alternates but were defeated in the first round, falling to Zoe Coggins and Kailee You of Huntington Beach Edison, 6-3, 6-1.
Lee, Wu and Ang traveled to the Seal Beach Tennis Center to compete in the round of 32 on Tuesday.
