Longtime Editor, Veteran Reporter Guide Tribune Coverage

Longtime Tribune editor Mitch Lehman and reporter Zane Hill are teaming to cover San Marino after the paper’s merger with The Outlook.

∎From The Publisher

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the community for your enthusiastic response concerning the recent merging of the San Marino Tribune and The Outlook. I received many messages of encouragement, and folks I encountered at local events also had kind words.
Your feedback has been very gratifying.
With the merger of the two newspapers, the question I’ve heard most often over the past 10 days has been “What are your plans for covering the city and the schools?”
As most of you know, Mitch Lehman has long served as The Tribune’s editor. He joined the newspaper in 1996 and, three years later, was promoted to its top editorial position, where he has performed ably for the past 21 years. His roots in the community run deep, and he has served as an emcee at local organizations’ fundraisers for decades in addition to being the voice of San Marino High School athletics; it was 24 years ago he began reporting on sports for the Tribune.
Meanwhile, Zane Hill served as The Outlook’s top San Marino reporter for the past three years, covering the City Council, San Marino Unified School District and everything in between. Zane had previously worked for Gannett, the parent company of USA Today. He, like Mitch, has relationships with school board and council members past and present.
Mitch and Zane have combined to win multiple awards from the California News Publishers Association, which presents its statewide honors each spring for news coverage in daily and weekly newspapers.
Members of our newspaper’s management team, including Vice President Mickie Sullivan and Executive Editor Camila Castellanos, felt the residents of San Marino would be best served by having both writers cover the city. So that’s what we’ve done. Mickie has said to me numerous times: “Together we’re better.” Hopefully you will agree with this merging of talent between The Tribune and The Outlook.
You’ll likely be seeing Mitch and Zane around town at official city meetings, SMUSD events, on the athletic fields and at gatherings for nonprofit organizations.
As I mentioned last week, we will cover local events extensively, produce feature stories, perform investigative reporting and highlight the community’s youth through their achievements in academics, athletics and the arts, as well as other accomplishments. The Tribune has been part of the fabric of the community for 91 years, since 1929. That is a remarkable legacy. Hopefully you will find that this San Marino Tribune, while under new ownership, will be a combination of the best elements from both The Tribune and The Outlook. We hope you enjoy what you will be reading.

Charlie Plowman is publisher of The Tribune.
