San Marino’s Maddie Gregg is recycling denim for her Girl Scout Gold Award project, and residents can help her.
Maddy Gregg wants to get 2,000 pairs of blue jeans in the near future.
But though that ambitious goal is not entirely foreign to many teenagers, Gregg has a much more philanthropic objective in mind far beyond her personal wardrobe.
A sophomore at San Marino High School, Gregg is working toward her Girl Scout Gold Award via a project called “2nd Day Denim,” with the purpose of collecting as much of it as humanly possible.
“Over 450,000,000 pieces of denim are added to our landfills each year,” said Gregg, who stated that the material can be upcycled into insulation for homes.
Participants in the program are asked to contact Gregg, who will drop off a bag at your doorstep on a Tuesday, to be picked up the following Thursday after 5 p.m. — full of donated denim hopefully. Gregg set the 2,000-pair goal because that is the amount of denim required to insulate an average-sized home. Any item of 90% cotton denim clothing works, no matter the color or fabric.
At San Marino High School, Gregg is involved in environmental conservation, water polo, drama and the Green Club, appropriately. She also enjoys public speaking, flying planes with her father, snorkeling and beekeeping, and even holds a position on the national leadership council for Jane Goodall’s esteemed Roots & Shoots program.
