San Marino resident Austin Chang, a 9-year-old origami crafter, had an exhibit at the Chicago OrigamiUSA Convention from March 8–10.
Chang, a Valentine Elementary third grader, was the youngest exhibitor who presented his collection of origami artwork at the convention.
The Chicago OrigamiUSA Convention, also known as COcon 2024, has been a platform for artists to showcase their talent in the ancient art of paper folding.
Chang’s origami exhibit included traditional cranes, flowers, boxes, and more complex modular creations. There were also dragons, as 2024 is the Year of the Dragon.
Chang’s journey into the world of origami began when he was just 6 years old after he was given some square paper with several origami books. His parents taught him the simplest origami technique: the cup. His fascination for the craft was evident from the start, so his parents encouraged him to explore this art form further.
What sets Chang apart is his creativity and innovative approach to folding. He likes to experiment with new folding techniques into his designs. His favorite origami artists include Jeremy Shafer, and Altadena resident Rober J. Lang.
COcon 2024 is affiliated with OrigamiUSA, the largest origami organization in the United States. OrigamiUSA’s mission is “to share the joy of paperfolding, preserve its history, nurture its growth, bring people together and encourage community among paper folders.”
