Chinese Club of San Marino Commemorates Arbor Day

The Chinese Club of San Marino, or CCSM, held its annual tree planting activity on Mar. 13 to encourage the community to protect the environment while commemorating the birthday of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the founding father of the Republic of China.

Benson Wang, deputy director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, or TECO, attended the tree planting ceremony and was also in attendance two years ago.

This year, the tree was planted in the road divider near 932 Huntington Dr.

San Marino Mayor Richard Sun said that over the years, the city has collaborated with TECO to plant trees.

“The ancient Chinese saying that the ancestors’ planting of the tree for the next generations to enjoy, is a tradition worth continuing,” said Mayor Sun, who presented certificates to Chou and Wang, while thanking them for the trees.

San Marino School Board President Joseph Chang said he has been on hand for more than 20 tree planting ceremonies.

“This is an excellent environmental activity and also presents a good example for our schoolchildren,” Chang said.

Ron Serven, the city’s environmental services manager, oversaw the planting of the camphor tree, which he said has beautiful branches, fragrant leaves, is easy to grow and is long lasting and common in the city.

Serven also said that the winter’s rain has also given hope that many local trees will recover their previous splendor.
