Robert (“Bob”) Andrew Scott

Bob Scott || April 18, 1936 – July 2, 2023

At 87 years young, our beloved Robert Andrew Scott (“Bob”) passed away peacefully while supported by the love of his family on the morning of July 2, 2023.

Bob was born in Los Angeles, California, to Herbert and Helen Scott and is survived by his older brother, Jim Scott.

Bob attended Cathedral Chapel Elementary School and later graduated from Loyola High School in Los Angeles in 1954.

Following high school, Bob graduated from Loyola University of Los Angeles (currently named Loyola Marymount University) with honors in 1958.

In July 1959, Bob joined the U.S. Army and was primarily stationed in Münchweiler, Germany. Bob returned home to California in 1961 and thereafter served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1965.

Following his full-time military service, in 1961, Bob returned to his position at Coast Federal Savings Bank, where he initially worked following college prior to his joining the military.

In 1963, Bob married Mary Ellen Husak, who remained his loving wife for the past 60 years. During their years of marriage, they had two children – Jon and Betsy.

In 1964, Bob enrolled in the Evening Division at Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles while continuing to work full-time at Coast. Soon thereafter, he successfully earned his degree of Juris Doctor and passed the California bar exam.

In 1973, the Scott family moved from their home in Los Angeles to San Marino, where the couple remained to this day.

During his 33-year career at Coast, Bob rose through the ranks to eventually become General Counsel and Senior Vice President of both Coast and its parent holding company, Coast Savings Financial, Inc. until his retirement in 1991.

As a father, Bob would always carve out time out from his very busy work schedule to be the coach of his son’s baseball and daughter’s softball teams. He will always be remembered as the coach with the biggest heart – and the brown paper bag filled with candy bars, Juicy Fruit gum and Now & Later candy chews for everyone on the team (and the opposing team, too!).

Bob was passionate about history, reading a good book, taking online learning courses and traveling the world with his family.

During his career and retirement years, Bob was well known for his service to others. Bob represented indigent defendants in felony criminal cases as part of the California Appellate Project. Bob also was a constant presence during his 50 years as a parishioner at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena where he served as an usher, a C.C.D. teacher, an R.C.I.A. sponsor, a Eucharistic Minister, and a member of various Holy Family boards, councils and committees.

Bob was, without a doubt, the kindest man our family has ever known. He always found time to help others and he had a knack for remembering everyone’s name. He leaves behind a positive rippling effect that is as deep and as broad as the eye can ever see.

Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Ellen, his brother, Jim Scott, and his children and their family: Jon, Martina, Veronica, Robert and Michael Scott of Carlsbad, California; and Betsy, Vince and William Farhat of Pasadena, California. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in memory of “Bob Scott” to a charity of your choice or to: “Mission Haiti” through the donation portal on the Holy Family Catholic Church (South Pasadena) website, or to the “Carmel of St. Teresa-Discalced Carmelite Nuns” located in Alhambra (carmelteresa.org).
